A Web3 name and a DNS domain can look identical without offering the same reach, control, renewal, or transfer path. Verify these facts before you pay.
A name can look like a domain without working like a normal internet domain. That distinction matters as blockchain-based and other alternative naming systems use labels that resemble familiar web addresses. It matters even more when a company announces an application for the same string in ICANN's global Domain Name System.
In August 2026, ICANN published an initial technical report on possible integrations between global DNS gTLDs and alternative naming systems. The report is preliminary. It does not turn every alternative-system name into a DNS domain, approve every proposed integration, or make an announced gTLD application available for registration.
Before paying for a Web3 name, a DNS domain, or a product that claims to connect both, verify exactly which system you are buying and what that system can do. Same words do not guarantee the same destination The global DNS is the naming system used by ordinary recursive resolvers, browsers, email systems, certificates, and most internet applications.
A DNS domain can be delegated through the root, registered through a registrar, and configured with records such as A, AAAA, MX, TXT, and CNAME. An alternative naming system can use the same dot-separated label while relying on a different resolver, wallet, application, browser extension, gateway, or ledger. Its controller, recovery method, renewal model, transfer process, and suspension behavior can also differ.
This does not make every alternative name useful or useless. It means the buyer should not infer global DNS reach from the appearance of the label alone. Eight checks before you pay 1. Identify the naming system Ask the seller or platform to name the authoritative system. Is the product a domain delegated in the global DNS, a name in an alternative namespace, or a paired product that claims to operate in both?
For a DNS domain, verify the extension in the IANA Root Zone Database and inspect the name with a current RDAP or registrar lookup. For an alternative name, read the platform's current resolution and custody documentation. Do not accept a landing page, wallet display, or sales listing as proof that the label exists in the global DNS. 2.
Test ordinary internet reach Test the name from a normal browser and standard DNS resolver without a special extension, gateway, or wallet. If email use matters, check whether the name can support globally reachable MX records and whether the intended mail provider accepts it.
